was a successful merchant and his mother
played the piano, painted, and loved to go to the theater. However,
Ibsen's family came upon some misfortunes when Ibsen was 8
years old his family went into poverty. This happened because his
father Knud had accumulated debt and became an alcoholic. In
order for Ibsen's father to pay off his debt he had to sell the family's
possessions, which led them to move into a piece of run down
farm land. By the age of fifteen, Ibsen had to leave school and he
went on to live in Grimstad. After the move, Ibsen began to work
as a pharmacist apprentice for six years. Doing this job is what led
Ibsen to start writing and painting during his free time. It was in
1858 that Ibsen had married his wife Suzannah Daae Thresen. The
following year Ibsen and his wife welcomed their only child a son
named Sigurd into the world.

His Works...
When it came down to Ibsen's works it all started when he decided
to go back to school. Ibsen wanted to attend the University of
Christiania so he moved to Christiania to prepare for the
examination. However, Ibsen did not pass all of his entrance exams
so he put aside the idea of school and stayed with writing. Ibsen's
first work created was the play Catilina in 1849, for his first play
he had a rough start because it was barely noticed. Ibsen finally
came onto some good fortune when he had an encounter with the
famous theater manager Ole Bull. Ibsen was lucky enough to have
been offered a job by Bull. The job was to be a writer
and manager for the Norwegian Theater in Bergen. This job
experience included a lot of travel, and for a first time manager in a
theater, the job was intense. However this job was vital
because it helped Ibsen learn more about his craft.
After fulfilling this job for awhile Ibsen went back to Christiania to
try his luck again in the theater world. Ibsen's try in the theater was
the same experience as the job before, a challenge for him.
Although, with all of these difficulties Henrik Ibsen was able to
create the play Loves's Comedy in 1862, a play with a satire
outlook on marriage. After writing this play Ibsen left Norway in
1862, and finally settled in Italy. In Italy is where Ibsen had wrote
the five-act tragedy known as Brand, in 1865. The tragedy was
about a clergyman with a strong faith that costed him his family
and at the end his life. This tragedy had gained Ibsen great fame
when it came to Scandinavia. Over the next two years Ibsen
worked on his masterwork, Peer Gynt a play that applied a modern
spin on Greek epics. It was not until 1868, that Ibsen picked up
everything and moved to Germany. In Germany is when he saw his
written social drama The Pillars of Society come to life in Munich.
This play was the peak of Ibsen's career because it helped launched
his plays and was followed by the famous, A Doll's House. The
play A Doll's House stirred up a lot of questions and surprise to his
audience at the time. A Doll's House challenged the roles between
a women being a mother an a wife in society. More of Ibsen's work
was created in 1881 called Ghosts, and this play touched on the
sensitive topic of incest along with venereal disease causing the
play to halt performance. Then came his next work, An Enemy of
the People, which explored the relationship between a man's
conflict with society. After that play was produced Ibsen created
two more plays The Lady from the Sea in 1888, and the famous
Hedda Gabler written in 1890. Hedda Gabler was so famous
because it again deals with a women who loathes her husband, but
yet destroys a love that stands in her husband's way in an academic
level. People have seen this character as a female Hamlet, one of
Shakespeare's tragic figures. Through Ibsen's works it was evident
to see the pain of his childhood but it had allowed him to become
the famous literature father of realism as well as a known play
wright.
Later Life...
After all of Ibsen's works and accomplishments he went back
home to Normandy where he was recognized as a literary hero,
and a well known playwright. Ibsen was honored with events for
him on his birthday and his works. However, Ibsen's later life did
not sop him from writing plays after returning home Ibsen wrote
The master Builder. Then came the play When We Dead Awaken,
written in 1899. By 1900 Ibsen's health began taking a toll on him
when he had experienced a series of strokes. After these incidents,
Ibsen lived on for another few years until he died in 1906, on May
23.
